Poverty & Hunger

calcutta man.jpg

The problem of poverty and hunger anywhere is a problem for all of us everywhere – in particular those who inhabit the developed world. We have the responsibility to end this kind of suffering when it’s in our power to do so.

True, much of poverty and hunger results from systemic problems, corrupt governments that impede humanitarian aid, civil wars and weather conditions. But Jesus didn’t say, “The poor you will always have with you… (Mark 14:7)” as an excuse for His church to ignore the needs of the poor. Instead, God advocates justice for the poor and calls His people to spending ourselves on behalf of feeding the hungry.(Is 58:10; Ps 41:1; Proverbs 14:31 and 28:27)

Check out these facts:

  • 2.2 million children die each year because they’re not immunized
  • Today, across the world, 1.3 billion people live on less than one dollar a day; 3 billion live on under two dollars a day; 1.3 billion have no access to clean water; 3 billion have no access to sanitation; 2 billion have no access to electricity
  • Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names

Why Care? Because we’re told by God to care and to do something. As faithful followers of God, we must do something
